The maker

Fabbri

The Amarena Fabbri story begins in 1905, when Gennaro Fabbri and his wife Rachele ran a general store in Portomaggiore beside a wild black-cherry orchard. Rachele slow-cooked and semi-candied the cherries in copper pots, creating a treat that became famous as Amarena Fabbri; to thank her, Gennaro commissioned a blue-and-white ceramic jar from Faenza artist Riccardo Gatti — a decorative motif that has identified the brand ever since. Production moved to Bologna in the 1920s, and the cherries are still made there today to a closely guarded family recipe, semi-glacé and preserved in their dark syrup.
